10 Creative, Inexpensive and DIY Gifts for Mom

Mother's day, mom gifts, diy, inexpensive

In last weeks post we shared 17 gifts for many different kinds of moms and many different budgets. Today’s post we are focusing on inexpensive, yet creative, gifts for mom or gifts you can make. All 10 gifts can be tailored to fit your budget and creativity.

I have enjoyed researching and writing these Mother’s day gift round ups. Writing these has helped me to come up with gift ideas for my own mom. So, I guess, I should be thanking you, for pushing me to think out of the box for a gift ideas.

Gifts for Mom

1. Recipe book of your favorite dishes mom makes. Include a favorite memory for each one.

2. Put together a photo album for mom and include a written narration of the photo, or why it is so special.

3. Create a pampering package for mom complete with homemade scrubs.

DIY and Inexpensive mom gifts brunch and manicures

4. Mani-Pedi and Brunch! There are two options for this idea, yummy brunch at home followed by DIY manicures. OR Homemade brunch followed by mani-pedi’s at the salon. We did this one year. It was a day before Mother’s Day celebration. We called ahead and the salon was more than happy to accommodate the 4 of us. It was a lot of fun!

5. For the mom that prefers things more on the earth friendly side and likes her cleaning supplies toxic free; make a package of earth friendly cleaning supplies.

6. Check your local nursery and see if they are offering any classes you and mom can take.

Groupon classes mother's day gift

7. If flowers aren’t mom’s thing, check Groupon and see if they’re offering any unique classes that mom and you would enjoy.

  • Groupon is great place to check out cool things to do with mom, that she might not have done before, and at a price you can afford. One year for Mother’s Day, my siblings and I found a discount on an afternoon tea experience at a great little bakery near us. Our mom had always wanted to have high tea, so it was a gift she enjoyed. We had fun too. I can’t say no to petite fours! Yum!

8. Take mom on a picnic and nature walk.

9. If mom likes plants and fresh food, plant a container salsa garden for her. Wholefully.com and Bonnieplants.com have two different versions to help you plan and plant your gift.

tomato and basil mother's day diy and inexpensive gifts

10. Planting a bruschetta container garden is another option; if mom is more into Italian food. A bruschetta garden is equally as easy as a salsa garden. In your containers you will simply plant tomato plant and basil.

  • I plant this for my family every summer. You can have fun with this. Plant cherry tomatoes or regular it really doesn’t matter. My big tip, is to plant 3 basil plants with it. Basil and tomatoes not only taste good together, but they are companion plants. They help keep each other healthy and increase one another’s flavor.

Go Time

Now the ball is in your court.

Whether you are looking for a gift for Mother’s day, mom’s birthday, or another occasion, we hope these round ups have given you some ideas. I hope you have a great time spending time with your mom or loved one.

Do you have a gift idea that was a big hit with your mom? I’d love to hear about it. 🙂

17 Thoughtful Gifts that Mom Will Love

Mother's Day Gifts for All Moms, including cat moms and dog moms

Mother’s day is 3 weeks away, which also means May is right around the corner. I don’t know abut you, but this has really snuck up on me! In our area we have seen snow and cold weather late into April. I am hoping that May will mean the snow is gone. It can’t snow on mother’s day, right?

With this mother’s day gift list, I wanted to help you find unique, usable gifts for the mom in your life, while allowing you to stay within your budget.

While compiling this list, I also tried to take into account that there are so many types of moms, grandmothers, and maternal figures today, with diverse interests. I hope this list of mom gifts helps you to find something for the unique, amazing lady in your life.

Gift Guide For Moms

Healthier nail polish

Is mom the kind of gal who likes to do at home mani pedi’s or take her own polish to the salon? I highly recommend Zoya nail polish as a gift. I love Zoya. I use it exclusively when I visit my local nail salon. Zoya is great because it has the staying power of traditional polish, while being more eco-friendly than traditional polish! If that weren’t cool enough, here are over 300 Zoya shades to choose from!

The big bonus with Zoya is they are known for being a “healthier” alternative to traditional nail polish. Zoya is vegan friendly and free of what they call the BIG 10. This means it is free of Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Dibutl, Toluene, Camphor, TPHP, Parabens, Xylene, Ethyl, Tosylamide, Lead.

This means that it is safer for us to inhale than other nail polishes. The fact that other nail polishes have lead in them is alone scary enough!

Mani Maintenance

A manicure set is a great gift for the mom who likes to pamper at home or maintain the mani-pedi she has. This 6-piece Ted Baker London Manicure set is made of stainless steel. It will last for years and it is small enough for her to pack in her purse or luggage.

Yoga Mom Accessories

So many mom’s practice yoga these days, whether at home or at the gym. Trust me, from one yoga lady to you, moms can always use yoga accessories.

If you are searching for the right yoga gift for mom, a yoga mat tote is great place to start.

Once the yoga mat is rolled up, it can still be a little cumbersome, especially if you are juggling a purse and car keys to boot. Help mom retain that after yoga relaxed vibe by gifting her this Tree of Life Yoga Tote or The Citron Sundial Gaiam Tote. These yoga mat totes have room not only for her yoga or Pilates mat, but but they also have space for her keys, water, and a towel!

Yoga Just Got Better

Hot Yoga Mat Towels are awesome! I bought one last year for a hot yoga class and fell in love. These towels are super absorbent and help keep you from slipping. I like mine so much that I use it during regular yoga. If your mom is a yogi, this is a nice addition to her hot or regular yoga practice.

Have Beverage Will Travel

A Healthy Humans Water Bottle is so much more than a water bottle. The healthy humans stainless steel water bottle is double walled so that it can keep mom’s drink cold for 24 hours or hot for 12 hours. Whether mom is taking a walk or heading to the office her beverage will stay the perfect temperature.

There are over 20 different color and design options. Equally impressive, in my opinion, it that Healthy Human water bottles fit most cup holders and 3rd party tested to be sweat-free! Yup, you read that right no water bottle puddles for mom to deal with!

Stylish Candles

Henri Bendel is synonyms with luxury and style. Bendel’s candles do not disappoint. Each candle arrives in classic Bendel’s striped box with 7 different amazing scents to choose from. I have personally purchased Jasmine & Bergamot, Eucalyptus & Sea Salt, and Neroli & Mandarin. I love each of them. I have smelled the rest and just haven’t gotten around to purchasing them, although I’ve got my eye on Vanilla & Sandalwood as my next addition. Each scent is not too heavy, but is exotic, and pleasant smelling. I have family that special request Bendel’s candles for Christmas.

Garden Mom

Garden mom mother's day gifts

Garden Markers made from re-purposed dinnerware are a cute and unique addition to any garden. WhisperingMetalworks takes old silverware and hand stamps them for plant markers, or customize them with sayings, or mom’s name. These will help mom keep track of what she’s planted and she’ll be able to reuse them year after year.

Versatile Accessories

Mom’s need versatile accessories, like purses that can do several jobs while still looking nice. This reversible faux leather tote is perfect for looking nice or dropping the kids off at school. I have owned the Street Lever Reversible Faux Leather purse for 2 years now and it still looks great! I still receive compliments on it all of the time. I love that it is so versatile. I can switch from black to brown depending on the season or what I’m wearing. It also holds a ton of stuff! I can fit my iPad, water bottle, wallet, and miscellaneous stuff comfortable. Allowing my hand to be free for carrying groceries or holding little hands.

Techie Mom

Ok, mom doesn’t necessarily need to be a techie for the stylish Honsky Solid Portable Universal Aluminum Desktop Charger Stand to be a great gift. She just needs to have a tablet, reader, or cell phone. The Honsky Portable stand is great if mom simply wants a place to charge her phone, but if she likes to use her iPhone, cellphone, or tablet when cooking or watching a show, she will now have a way to safely prop it up. The Honsky Portable stand comes in 7 different colors, including Rose Gold. With a price point under $10 maybe order one for yourself too. I’ll be honest, that is exactly what I did!

Artsy Mom

Maybe you have a mom who likes literature, interesting quotes, or art on upcycled dictionary pages, then these gifts will be right up her alley. They are so unique and beautiful that house guests will definitely ask her about them.

Moms who Cook

The cook book, The Vegetable Butcher: How to Select, Prep, Slice, Dice, and Masterfully Cook Vegetables from Artichokes to Zucchini by Cara Mangini is a great gift for the novice cook or experienced cook. I bought this book last fall in an effort to diversify how I prepare veggies. I love this book!

This book is full of great photos; which is helpful when Cara is teaching you the correct ways to slice and prep a variety of vegetables. Cara informs you of which varieties of a particular veggie are the best. Which veggies pair well with other things, like beans, cheese, and such. She’ll even show you the best cooking methods for that particular vegetable.

This book is a wealth of information. The recipes are do-able for chefs of all skill levels and the ingredients are easy to find.

Super Mom

A Wonder Woman apron is a fun cooking accessory for your friendly neighborhood superhero, mom. However, if mom is more of a Batgirl or Supergirl there is an apron for her too.

The Mothers of Fur Babies

Mothers day gift dog mom, cat mom, fur babies

While some of these gifts can be for the mom whose kids have 4 legs; I’ve put together a few gifts that target cat moms and dog moms specifically. The bond between a mom and her four-legged babies is pretty special too.

Cat Moms Paws

Cat mom's mother's day gifts

Help mom keep her hands from getting burned by her warm beverage cup with HookedbyAngel’s cat coffee or tea cozy. This things are so darn cure! HookedbyAngel offers cat cozies hand crocheted with fuzzy yarn or traditional yarn. Both are super cute, both come in a variety of colors, but I really like the fuzzy yarn cozies, because the cat has a tail! How cute it that?!

Game of Thrones Cat Mom

Does mom love her fur babies, Game of Thrones, and helping the planet? Then the Mother of Cats Khaleesi inspired tote bag is perfect for her! When she uses this tote, all will know that she is:

“Mother of Cats. First of her name.

The Unscratched.

Queen of the Litter Tray.

Protector of the Cat Biscuits.”

This tote is available in pink or black.

Dog Mom Pride

dog mom, mother's day gifts for dog mom

Allow mom to show off her babies while she drinks her favorite hot beverage with a personalized dog and mom mug. MysticCustomDesignCo will put mom and her pup, or two, on a mug with their names underneath, then on the other side it will read “insert-breed Mom”. MysticCustomDesignCo has many breeds to choose from! Another thing I like, they have different skin tone, hair colors, and types so that avatar mom will more closely resemble real mom.

Hands Free Mom

I am trying not to speak for all dog moms, but I have my hands full when it comes to taking my fur babies to the park. I have my purse, the poo bags, keys in my pocket if I wore a coat, the list goes on. A cross body messenger bag with a grommet for dispensing poo bags, can help mom feel more organized and hands-free when she heads to the park.

TwoLilDoggos offers two sizes of cross body messenger bag, small and med. Both are large enough to carry mom’s keys, cell phone, wallet, hand sanitizer, and it has a specific place for poo bags. Mom then pulls the bags through a little grommet. Everything is discrete and hands-free.

A dog walking messenger bag will allow mom to juggle less and get down to the business of having fun with her favorite walking buddy.

Fur Baby Mom Pride

Decals by DashofFlair will allow mom to let the world know that she is proud cat mom. Their cat mom decal is so original. The words Cat Mom are topped with cat ears with whiskers on the side. Customize the size and color of each decal. Then stick it on the car, laptop, tablet, mug, tumbler, you name it.

Just like DashofFlair, TheAudaciousDecal offers decals. Their DogMom decal can also be customized. Choose the size and color that mom would like best, then stick it on the car, laptop, tablet, mug, tumbler, ect.

My Bad

You may have noticed that this post is a few days behind. I apologize for that. I ran into a snag getting this post to go live. Thankfully, once I had the time, Bluehost ( my hosting company) was able to work the kinks out for me. There is never a good time to hit a snag, especially when it is a week where one is pressed for time. Oh well, all’s well that ends well. And a big thank you to Bluehost!

Four Amazing Bloggers that will Inspire and Motivate You

four inspiring bloggers, motivation blogs

There are so many great bloggers out there. I love that there is a blog for every niche, it’s great! I am kind of in the frugal, wellness, lifestyle niche for the busy person. I’m passionate about trying to help busy individuals work self-care and wellness into their crazy busy lives, while staying on a budget. One thing I like about my blog “niche” is that it encourages me to search out and read a variety of blogs.

I wanted to share with you some of the blogs I am currently reading. I simply adore these blogs and find these ladies inspirational.

Natalie Bacon

Natalie Bacon of NatalieBacon.com went from lawyer to financial planner and blogger to full time blogger this year! Natalie’s story is inspiring for so many reasons. This is the abridged version: She graduated from law school with a ton of debt. She started a blog in order to share her journey of paying down debt. She quit her job as a lawyer and took a 50% pay cut in order to become a financial planner. All the way her blog was helping her chip away at her student loan debt. Just last month, Natalie released her first product, How I made $45K Blogging in One Year, and she was able to quit her job and become a full-time blogger!!

Why should you head over to Natalie’s blog? I’m glad you asked. Her blog is full of not just blogging and financial info, but she also blogs about personal development. She has amazing tips and motivations to help with productivity, time management, habits, goals, and success. These are the things she has done to reach the level of success she is experiencing.

And if you don’t have much time to read her blog, no worries, she has a Youtube channel too. Prepare to be informed and motivated.

FITnancials

Alexis blogs at FITnancials.com. FITnancials is a blog that stated out covering Alexis’s 60-pound weight loss. Over the years her blog has evolved into a fitness, budget, travel, and lifestyle blog. Two years ago, Alexis was able to quit her job and blog full time. She recently celebrated making $10,000 a month with her blog and she is getting ready to graduate from college! Wow!

Like Natalie, Alexis is very positive. She posts about the power of positive mindset. And it must be working, she went from making $1,000 a month with her blog to making $10,000, all within one year. Her blog is chock full of budget friendly ways to eat healthy, travel, and all-around budget money. To top it off, Alexis has great side hustles that you can do while you travel or just to help make ends meet. Be prepared, after visiting Alexis’s blog you may feel motivated to head to the islands, laptop in hand, and start a side hustle of your own.

Chasing Foxes

OK, Chasing Foxes isn’t so much a she as a they, but they are inspiring all the same. Grace and Silas wanted to improve their lifestyle and travel the globe. March of 2016 ChasingFoxes.com was launched, four months later they were making over $3000 a month with their blog.

Grace and Silas have a passion for travel and life and it shows in their blog. Their blog has something for everyone. Chasingfoxes.com has tips, hacks, and advice on money, lifestyle, travel, food and more.

Grace and Silas’s success is inspiring but so is their content. They have so many amazing hacks for cleaning your car, organizing, and finances. But my favorite part of their blog, is the travel inspiration. Visit their Instagram page and prepare to be amazed at places they have traveled all while blogging.

Hello Glow

Hello Glow, is an amazing wellness and lifestyle blog authored by Stephanie Gerber. Hello Glow, is a hearty blog over flowing with wellness and DIY inspiration. While perusing Stephanie’s blog you will learn how to make your own Calendula Skin Healing Oil, while drinking a Spring Detox Smoothie, and then you can start to create your very own Zen Oasis.

Hello Glow’s, got it all. I feel like I’ve barely done it justice. The blog layout is clean and easy to manage, but make sure you have some time. Once you start reading the blog you will travel down a rabbit hole of inspirational wellness.

Blogs

Whether your looking for motivation, inspiration, or just some great information, I hope

these 4 ladies inspire you as much as they inspire me.

What are your favorite blogs?

28 Eco Hacks You Can Do Today on Any Budget

An environmentally friendly lifestyle doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. Small changes to our lifestyles can save money as well as lower our carbon footprint.

You’ll notice our green list includes some green lifestyle hacks that you are probably already doing ,or accustomed to hearing, as well as new ones. All of these green hacks are easy to fit into your life and are easy on the pocket book. A definite win-win!

Earth day doesn’t need to be only one day a year. Make every day April 22 with these easy, economical green lifestyle changes.

Clothing & Accessories

Another Chance. By purchasing clothes and accessories used we save money, reduces manufacturing pollutants, and keep old clothes out of landfills. Next time you are in the market for some new shoes, bracelets, or purse, consider buying gently used at your local thrift store, second hand shop, consignment shop, garage sale, and let’s not forget eBay.

Give away or donate your old clothes instead of throwing them in the trash.

  • Clothing swap is a great excuse to get together with friends. Have them bring their clothes, and accessories. Make a day or evening out of it; maybe with some wine or mimosas? Help the environment while also having a great time.

Sniff Test. According to NPS.gov, the average washing machine uses 41 gallons of water per load and the average dryer accounts for about 6% of a home’s energy consumption. We can lower our water and energy consumption by:

  • only washing our clothes when they smell
  • make each load a full load
  • use cold water for laundry, this small switch, for 1 year, would result in enough energy to power a car for 421 miles!
  • Dry full loads of laundry. Even better, utilize a drying rack or clothes line to really save some green and help the planet.
  • Switch to fragrance free and environmentally friendly laundry products, dryer sheets, or wool dryer balls. Fragranced laundry products have been found to emit VOC’s. While standard laundry detergents include surfactants and phosphates both of which contribute to problems with in our water ways.
  • Clean lint screen after every dryer load, improves circulation and efficiency.

Feeling eco-crafty? You can DIY your own laundry detergents and wool dryer balls! This will most certainly save money and the planet will thank you. Bonus, making your own products will make you feel so accomplished!

Here are some great blogs to help you out:

  • Detergent- Kelly Dixon at The Smart School House has a 3 Ingredient Homemade Laundry Detergent recipe that OK for HE machines. Her post has great pictures and a video tutorial to help make this batch of laundry detergent.
  • Dryer Laundry ball- Erika at A Little Insanity has a great DIY wool dryer ball tutorial. Her tutorial is so complete, that I feel I might be able to pull off making a few of these! Trust me, that is saying something.

Household

Thermostat, switch out the old for one with an energy star rating. According to energy.gov, we can save up 10% on the heating and cooling of our homes by simply turning the thermostat back by 7-10 degrees for 8 hours a day.

  • Winter, set the thermostat to 68 while you are awake, turn it back a few degrees while you sleep
  • Summer, try it at 78 while you are awake.

Water heater. Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Energy.gov has found that switching from manufacture recommendation of 140 to 120 degrees will result in a significant amount of money and energy saved every year. Bonus, turning down the water heater will also reduce mineral deposits and corrosion of your water pipes. Saving energy, saving money on energy and repair bills!

CAUTION: always consult your water heater’s owner’s manual before adjusting your settings!

Kitchen, like so much of our households, holds room for eco-improvement.

  • Dishwasher, run only when full and choose eco-friendly, biodegradable, and plant-based dishwashing products. These will clean without harmful bleaching agents and phosphates.

Food

  • Need warm or boiling water? An electric tea kettle can help and for less money than using the stove top. There are so many different types to choose from and many price points. It is easy to find an electric tea kettle for most budgets.
  • Make soups, stew, and meals in the crockpot. Using the oven and stove incur costs and energy usage, but they also can warm up the house. This can be a problem in the warmer months, causing the AC to be used more often. Save fossil fuel and money by using your slow cooker. The meal will be just as warm and tasty, but more environmentally friendly!
  • Local is where its at. Local is defined by the Farm Act as any food that’s origin is no more than 400 miles from its end point. Local food is healthier, not only due to its smaller carbon foot print, since it has spent less time in transit, it still has many of its vitamins and minerals intact. Buying local food will save energy, pollutants, and benefits our local growers and producers.
  • Skip the Red Meat. The raising and producing of beef is very resource intensive. In comparison to other meat and vegetables, beef ,and lamb production, has been found to account for 10 to 40 times more green house gas emissions than vegetables and grains. To boot, it takes 840 gallons of water to produce 1 serving of red meat! This is an area where small changes really can make a big impact on our environment.

Bathroom

Water off. The average sink faucet will pump out 3 gallons a minute. Make sure to turn off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth.

Showering saves more water than taking a bath. Switch out your old for showerhead for a low-flow version and get ready to save cash and water. This small switch saves ½ gallon of water per minute.

Faucets and Aerator upgrades can save 700 gallons of water per year, which equates to about 40 showers. Look for the Water Sense certification. These are inexpensive fixes that can really make a difference for your wallet and the planet.

Out and About

Coffee Break. Many coffee shops will allow you to bring your own travel mug and give you a small discount on the fill, like Starbucks for example.

Save your card board coffee sleeves and re-use the next time you grab some java. Or purchase a super cute knit coffee sleeve off of Etsy. I was gifted a cute pink knit sleeve with a yellow flower years ago. I love it!

BYOW, bring your own water. Americans consume 3.3 million water bottles an hour! Unfortunately, only 1/5th of those will be recycled. Break the cycle by purchasing a reusable water bottle. From the grocery store to Amazon, it’s easier than ever to find a reusable water bottle that fits your budget and lifestyle.

Just say no, to plastic grocery bags. I know this has been said before, but Americans are still using them. To the tune of 100 billion plastic grocery bags a year and they account for 8 % of litter. Leave some canvas bags in the car so they’re always ready for the next shopping trip.

April 22 is officially Earth day but will these small changes every day can be Earth day at you house.

Your Turn

Do you have any eco-friendly hacks that work for you? We’d love hear them!
