10 Anxiety and Stress Hacks for Your Next Social Event

Those of us that suffer from social anxiety and stress know that our anxiety likes to rear its annoying head at the mere mention of a social engagement. Social anxiety does not care if we would like to go to the event, or not. Anxiety is there. Hanging around in the background taking away our joy.

Whether you suffer from social anxiety disorder or holiday stress it can be tempting to skip the social event, or events, in hopes of quelling your nerves. However, experts advise sufferers to avoid skipping social gatherings all together. Avoiding all parties can increase negative emotions and the feeling of being isolated. Nobody wants that. What is an anxious person to do?

We have put together a list of 10 social hacks to help you make it through, and maybe even enjoy, your next party. These 10 hacks can be used in conjunction with 12 Stress and Anxiety Hacks for an Better Holiday Season.

10 social anxiety hacks have been divided into pre-party and party. As we social anxiety and stress sufferers know, anxiety starts long before the day of the party.

Pre-Party

You have been practicing self-care. You’re minimizing your anxiety and stress. You’re doing great but the day of the party has arrived. You can feel the stress and anxiety of the impending social situation starting to creep in. You may even start to entertain the idea of skipping the event.

Fear not! You are a tough cookie! With a little pre-planning, self-care, and possible help from a friend, we are going to help you get your foot in that party door!

Plan Ahead

Before the day of the office party, family gathering, friends party, insert-name-of-function-here, devise a plan.

Identify the parts of these social situations that seem to trigger anxiety. If the thought of walking through the door of the event has got your anxiety going, having a plan will help you get through the door and one step closer to having fun. If the thought of talking to people makes you stop cold in your tracks, preparing ahead of time can increase your likely hood of having fun.

Ask a friend to go with you.

Bringing a friend who knows how you are feeling can help to give you a safe island in the sea of party goers.

Practice talking to people in the mirror.

It may seem a little goofy, but practicing conversations can help you to feel more prepared with responses.

Practice making eye contact and asking others questions about themselves.

Wellness

On the day of the event, try to take some time to relax. Breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, and exercise are useful tools for combating anxiety and stress.

Practicing Self-care on a stressful day can help ease some of the anxiety by allowing you to focus on yourself, your needs, and not the event at hand.

Eating healthy, nutritious meals is an important component to self-care. Eating well balanced meals and snacks will help keep your sugar levels balanced. When your sugars are balanced it helps to balance your mood as well.

Party Time

It is party time. You are ready to go. Remember, You are a brave, amazing person, that deserves a fun night. You can do this!

Once you arrive at the party, here are some social hacks that will allow you to be a part of the party without talking a lot.

Tell them how you feel.

Whether you were able to bring a friend or not, you may still be dealing with feelings of stress and anxiety. Consider telling one of the party goers, whom you trust, how you are feeling. Often others will confession similar feelings.

Emily Newberry, LPC was interviewed by Dr. Oz’s website. In her expert opinion, “Sharing that you’re dealing with social anxiety can normalize the feelings that you’re having and lighten the situation, so you don’t feel so alone,” explains Newberry.

Ask People About Themselves.

People love to talk about themselves. Some good go-to’s are complimenting them, asking about their children, dog, job, favorite drink, how do they know the host/hostess, ect.

This is my personal favorite. I find I can get a lot of mileage from this strategy. Often before I know it, I’m enjoying to conversation too.

Remember to smile and make eye contact. This will help put others at ease and your smile can help to relax you as well.

Lend a Helping Hand

If the party is feeling a little overwhelming, ask your host if you can give them a hand. They will appreciate your helpfulness and the purposeful work may help ease some of your anxiety too.

Step Away

Don’t be afraid to step outside for a bit of fresh air, if the atmosphere gets to be a little much for you. This can give you time to clear your head, do a few breathing exercises, regroup.

The bathroom is another good place to regroup and do a few breathing exercises.

No Alcohol, Limit Caffeine

While at the party, it may be tempting to have a drink, or 5, in order to calm your nerves. Some people may suggest alcohol to help you cope with the anxiety. On the contrary, experts warn that alcohol and too much caffeine can actually cause panic attacks. No thank you!

No Pressure

It can be advantageous to put a time limit on your party stay. Talk to yourself,or your friend, and come up with an idea of how long you would like to try and stay at the event. 15 minutes, half-hour, 4 hours? I encourage you to make your goal attainable.

When the clock strikes, and you are feeling comfortable, party on! Alarms gone off and you are feeling stressed? Give yourself permission to go home.

Whether you were at the social event for 10 minutes or you partied until it was time to cleanup, congratulate yourself. Social anxiety is a serious thing. It can feel immensely overwhelming. However, you got out there. You did it! This is your victory. Celebrate yourself. You deserve it!

What are some strategies you have employed in the past that have worked? Do you have any tips for others that suffer from social anxiety or stress?

** Please, don’t hesitate to contact a health care professional if your anxiety and stress are becoming too much for you. They are there to help you. Remember, you are a special person and you deserve to feel well!

12 Stress and Anxiety Hacks for an Better Holiday Season

The holidays are a magical time filled with singing, delicious food, parties, family and gift giving. For some of us, stress and anxiety outweigh any magic the holiday season may offer.

The holidays can be stressful time. Some of us feel the pressure of tight budgets during a gift giving season. For others there are family situations that can cause stress. For the 15 million Americans that suffer from social anxiety disorder, the social gatherings of the season can feel more like a torture session than an enjoyable occasion.

The holiday season kicks off in a few days. We’ve compiled 12 hacks to help minimize the stress and anxiety of the holidays season.

1. Get Enough Sleep

When our bodies are stressed out it is more important than normal that we get 8 hours of sleep.

2. Eat Healthfully

Eat balance meals and have healthy snacks on hand for those in-between meal hunger pangs.

3. Move

This can be an exercise class, exercise videos, walking, walking the dog, ect. 5 minutes here and 5 minutes there of exercise may be the only way you can fit it into your schedule, and that’s ok.

Exercise is important because it releases endorphins in the brain. These help to reduce stress and improve sleep, to name a few.

4. Plan

Make a budget for gifts and stick to it. If money is tight, try not to let it weigh you down. Check out Pinterest and see if there is a DIY that is more budget friendly. For some DIY gifts, like sugar scrubs and bath bombs, the ingredients might already be in your cabinet!

Keeping on budget this season will cause less stress once the holidays are over.

Organizing your shopping, baking, and get-togethers on a calendar, or piece of paper, can help the tasks to feel less over whelming. It can also help prevent last minute stress due something being forgotten.

Organizing your tasks will also allow you to see if you may need a helping hand. By planning ahead, it should give you some lead time in finding the helpers you may need and help to reduce any stress or anxiety associated with the task.

5. Just Say No

This can be an over whelming time of year. If your calendar is becoming too packed, allow yourself to decline invitations guilt free. Use that free space on the calendar to recharge.

6. Have Me Time

Make self-care a priority. Practicing yoga, meditation, and prayer can work to calm your body and mind.

Try to fit in a minimum of 15 minutes, on a stressful or anxiety filled day, for you. Read a book, sit quietly, do breathing exercises, just focus on you, your needs, and relaxing, no distractions.

Here are a few podcasts to help with your self care routine:

The Daily Meditation Podcast these meditations and affirmations take less than 10 minutes. They are created to help with stress, anxiety, and poor sleep.

Headspace these are a little longer than the Daily Meditation podcast but it delves more deeply into the practice of mindfulness and meditation

7. No Pressure

Don’t put pressure on yourself to be a certain way or feel a certain way just because it is the holiday season.

If you are grieving a loss during this season, allow yourself to acknowledge your loss and feelings regarding that. The emotions of sadness and grief are a normal part of the healing process, regardless of the season.

8. Support System

Talk to a friend. Share with them how you are feeling this holiday season. Talking about your anxiety can lighten the burden of stress and anxiety.

Invite a friend to attend a social gathering with you. If social situations set off your anxiety, having a friend at the gathering will help minimize the pressure to socialize.

Call a counselor, doctor, or trusted advisor and let them know how the holidays are making you feel. They are there to help.

9. Volunteer

Doing good feels good. Giving back to your community not only makes you feel good, but it can help you to increase your friendships.

If you are a part of a religious or spiritual organization there is a good chance they have volunteer opportunities available.

If you aren’t sure where to start ,but you want to give your time, Volunteer Match.Org or The United Way are good websites to checkout. They help connect volunteers with local volunteer opportunities.

10. Positivity

This part can be hard when you are feeling overwhelmed, racked with stress and anxiety. Start a gratitude list. Find a time of the day that you can write down in a journal or on a piece of paper what you are thankful for that day.

Make plans that you would like to make. Maybe you’ll meet up with a friend for coffee or rent that movie you’ve been dying to see. Having plans that are your own can give you something positive to look forward during those social occasions that have you feeling anxious.

11. Breath

Breathing exercise are a great way to soothe anxiety and stress. As a bonus, they can be practiced anywhere!

If you feel a wave of anxiety coming on, go to your nearest bathroom, close the door, and relax your mind and body with a quick breathing sequence.

The UK’s NHS recommends these breathing tips:

If you’re sitting or standing, place both feet flat on the ground. Whatever position you’re in, place your feet roughly hip-width apart.

  • Let your breath flow as deep down into your belly as is comfortable, without forcing it.
  • Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.
  • Breathe in gently and regularly. Some people find it helpful to count steadily from one to five. You may not be able to reach five at first.
  • Then, without pausing or holding your breath, let it flow out gently, counting from one to five again, if you find this helpful.
  • Keep doing this for three to five minutes.

12. No Alcohol and minimize caffeine

Alcohol is a depressant. While it may be tempting to drink to alleviate the anxiety or stress you are feeling, it will only add to the negative feelings you are trying to combat.

Alcohol and caffeine can also trigger panic attack. Not fun.

The holidays can be challenge no matter if you suffer from social anxiety or not. Just know you are not alone. There are millions of other Americans feeling the same way.

Most importantly, remember to take care of yourself. Be kind to yourself. You are special and you deserve a great holiday season too!

Homemade sugar scrub. Yes, this is a DIY, but it is not hard. Honestly, the hardest part will be choosing a cute jar. There a just so many! A nice go to, and easy to find, is a small mason jar. Use an 80% to 20% ratio of sugar (brown, white, demerara) to oil (coconut, almond, olive). If you aren’t sure if your hostess has a favorite scent, this recipe would be sure to please:

  • 1C brown or demerara sugar
  • 1/4c oil
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp honey

Martha Stewart.com

Fresh Italian Dinner Pasta Basket. Martha Stewart suggests using fresh tomatoes and herbs to put together an Italian dinner basket, or box, for your host. It’s a little DIY but can be done even if you are running short on time.

Scented Sugar jars. These add a nice splash of flavor to coffee, tea, baked good, whatever you would put sugar in. Grab a cute jar or canister, amazon has some super cool ones, put the sugar into the container, then add vanilla beans, day old lemon or orange peel. Let them sit for a day or two to infuse the scent. If you have enough jars, you could make all three and give them as a set. Easy DIY gift!

Uncommongoods

Chalk board coasters from Uncommongoods. Add in a few pieces of chalk for fun. These coasters are stylish and helpful. No more drink mix ups at your host’s house. This gift will make you a party hero.

SkyRainSoap, Etsy

Beautiful Soaps. Everyone uses soap, fact. Not everyone will treat themselves to beautiful soaps. Treat your host to a useful, yet gorgeous gift of hand made soaps.

Matcha. For the healthy host. For those not familiar, good matcha is pricey. Your host will thank you!

Cards Against Humanity. This is for the cheeky host or hostess. It will have everyone rolling off their chairs with laughter. For $10 a box, it is also budget friendly!

Tutorial via Gourmet Gab

Scrabble Coasters. This is a DIY, but it doesn’t take a lot of time and you don’t have to be Martha Stewart to make them! If your host is fond of something, say wine, you can have fun spelling vino, wine, ect. with the scrabble squares. Tutorial via The Gourmet Gab.

Under $15

Gourmet Dog Treats. For the house where dogs are people too. The doggie parent will appreciate your thoughtfulness and Fido will too.

World Market

Wine bottle candles. For the eco-friendly host, there are salvaged wine bottles reborn as candles! These are from World Market and they come in the scent of pinot, sauvignon blanc, or merlot.

Rosemary trees wrapped with fabric and tied with string. In December these are often decorated as mini Christmas trees. Add few small Christmas bulbs and viola, you have a mini Christmas tree. These Rosemary trees can often be found at your local grocery store, this time of year. Long after the holiday is over they will smell nice and your host can use them to cook with. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving!

Slate Cheese Plate. A nice round slate cheese plate is perfect for the host who lives in an apartment or a mansion. It’s big enough to hold a nice assortment of cheese and charcuterie all without taking up a lot of space. It’s a gift your hostess can use regardless of season.

DIY Tutorial via Inspired by Charm.

Bath Bombs. Treat your host and make some extra to treat yourself! Again, this is a super easy DIY, it’s vegan, and chances are you have most of ingredients in your cabinet. The only thing you might be lacking, is the bath bomb molds, don’t worry Amazon has it covered. If you don’t have time to grab a bath bomb mold, use those old plastic Easter eggs you have lying around. Tutorial via Inspired by Charm.

Under $20

Card Catalog, Barnes and Noble

Card Catalog Note Card Set. This box is perfect for the host that likes things a little retro, a little old school. Make it even more special by including a favorite recipe. It is available at Barnes and Noble.

Salmon Cedar Plank with a Fish Turner. Add a sprig of fresh thyme for a little something extra.

Beautiful Clay Pot with Succulents. Succulents don’t take a lot of care. This little gift will brighten their home long after the party is over regardless of their green thumb.

If you happen to find some more wiggle room in your hostess budget might we suggest the

Simplifying the Morning for Less Stress

So many of us are looking for ways to make our lives and routines more efficient. I get it! Simplifying the morning routine is a good place to start that journey.

I talk to so many people who feel they do not have enough hours in the day. I’m without a doubt one of those people. It drives me crazy! I feel my weeks are nothing but run, run, run. As I’ve shared, the pace of my life has resulted in a lot of stress and health issues. So, what can we do?

I recently sat down and made a list of my day. It was one of those quiet times, when I was up before anyone else. No one to interrupt me. Let me just say, it was nice! Any who, back to the subject, lists. Making a list of the day, for me is so helpful. In order to see where I could start to experiment with making my day more time efficient, I started with an hour by hour list, from the time I wake up until I go to bed. This opened my eyes to a few places where time wasn’t necessarily being wasted but it just wasn’t being used as well as it could.

Here are some ways I have been able to simplify my routine and maximize time:

  • Combine some tasks. For me, walking on the treadmill and reading my text books. You could sub in watching the news, catch up on podcasts, I have even talked on the phone while on the treadmill or home exercise bike.
  • Do not change when working out. Hear me out on this one. When I am walking on the treadmill and reading my textbook, I cannot walk too fast. However, I can use the incline to challenge myself a bit. I am moving, but I not sweating, so wearing my same jeans and a tee-shirt is ok. However, if you are someone prone to sweating easily, I realize this would not be a great time saver for you.
  • Wear workout clothes to bed. This can help motivate you to get out of bed and start your workout straight away. It’s a time saver and a motivator!
  • Embrace the mini workout. Given to my own devices I would love to devote 1 hour minimum to exercise a day. Currently, I don’t have that. I know you have heard me talk about POPSUGAR’s mini workouts. I can’t tout them enough. If you only have 5, 10, 20, 30 minutes to workout. They have something for you. A little here, a little there really can add up. Plus, your body and mind will thank you. You are doing something for you, and you are important!
  • Breakfast, eat it. Purchase healthy breakfast bars. I wish I was able to indulge in avocado toast or a smoothie bowl for breakfast every day, but often that is not my reality. I am currently loving Kashi Nut Butter bars. They come in several variety, Salted Chocolate Chunk, Coconut Cashew Macaroon, Almond Snicker doodle, and Chocolate Trail Mix (my personal fav). They are gluten-free, low in sugar, about 150 calories, they have real nut butters, real ingredients, and lots of flavor. Pair your breakfast bar with an orange, apple, or another fruit that fits easily in your purse. Now you are out the door and you have a healthy breakfast.
  • Every minute counts and some is better than none. I hate not having a large block of time in order to get reading, bills, or whatever done. But my life does not include that “indulgence”, currently. So, I am learning to embrace the fact that I need to use the 30 minutes here, 15 minutes there, to get things done, such as some bills, some reading, some meal prep, some homework. That some does eventually add up to a whole.
  • Minimize the morning skin care routine. The morning skincare and makeup routine is very important. So many times, the makeup done in the morning is the face that will be seen for the rest of the day. Which makes it important to minimize but do it right.

I highly recommend the Body Shop’s Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter. It has a light, non-greasy feel to it. You simply rub your fingertips over the cleansing butter then apply it to your face, neck, décolleté, anywhere that will need cleansed that morning. Use a warm wash cloth to remove. Viola! Done!

I find my skin is so clean afterward, that when I use a toner, there is no dirt residue on my cotton ball!

Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter

Currently the Body Shop’s online store has a 40% off hundreds of items sale! It’s a great time to try the Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter and maybe a body butter or two!

When it comes to simplifing the morning makeup routine I love Almay’s face palette, The Complete Look. It has eye shadow, blush, and lip color for morning or night. Everything you need all in one convenient place.

I use the palette for light/med skin tone. I was a little skeptical as to how it would work with my skin tone. I love it! The palette colors look great when used on my pale winter/spring skin or my summer tan skin. Plus, everything is right there. No searching. It even has a mirror inside!

Almay the complete look face palette

Almay The Complete Look

One of my favorite aspect of the Almay Complete Look palette is that the lightest color neutralizes my eyelid redness. I tend to have pinkish to reddish tinted eyelids. They always look like I’ve been rubbing them. I have found that the top lightest shade in the palette neutralizes my redness, so I use it every single day! I follow it up by using the middle color on my crease. It is fast and I look well rested within moments.

I know how hard it can be to take some for yourself when you are a super busy individual. Try to find those moments. Find those moments, whether it’s waiting in the car line at your kid’s school, or you arrive a few minutes early to work. Those maybe small moments, but they can be a great time to use the Note’s app on your phone or a scrap piece of paper to start to jot down your day. What does it look like? Which parts are causing you a lot of stress? Where can you start to make changes? Never forget you are important to those around you and yourself. Take the moments you need to help yourself be the healthiest you that you can be. There is only one of you, and you are so important.
